Mō te tūrangi mahi - About the role
The Youth Worker will provide support to Rangatahi within the Nelson /Tasman community who are linked to Youth Justice. The delivery of day-to-day care, guidance services and planned programmes for rangatahi who are in the Youth Justice system. This position will assist in the delivery of the funding contracts through government or non-government contracts which will require adhering to the unique discipline areas:
Youth Development Plans, Te Kakano, youth community work, mentoring and tautoko Fresh Start contracts
Support whānau and link them with the appropriate services
Broker and advocate for whānau with relevant support agencies
Mōu - About you
Our ideal candidate will:
A current understanding of the social, health, employment and economic issues facing whānau.
Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated networking and negotiating skills
Have a working knowledge of iwi, hapū and whānau ki Te Tau Ihu ō Te Waka ā Maui.
Have a strong commitment to working in partnership within Te Tiriti ō Waitangi framework.
Possess a good level of understanding of Tikanga Māori and te reo Māori is preferred
Bring sound judgement, time management and organisational skills.
Have established community connections and knowledge of local networks
Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and report writing ability
Be motivated and flexible
Have a clean full driver’s license
Have a tertiary qualification or the equivalent work history and experience in Kaupapa Māori/Health/Social work/Youth work etc.
This role would suit someone with excellent communication and listening skills, with established connections to local support services, both government and community agencies. Someone who is non-judgmental and committed to providing better outcomes for our rangatahi in a mana enhancing manner.

We are seeking a qualified social worker to assist in the delivery of contracts for the Ministry of Children; Oranga Tamariki. With proven experience in working with Māori and the ability to provide comprehensive tikanga Māori social work support for, individuals and whānau who have Māori rangatahi, tamariki and pēpē, within the designated Nelson and Tasman regions.
Mōu - About you
Your ability to build relationships with whānau (whakawhānaungatanga) and provide services in a mana enhancing manner (whakamanatia) is a vital part of this role. Your knowledge of services and experience with a Whānau Ora approach will provide support, information, advice, and direction to access appropriate resources from other support and funding agencies in the Whānau Ora and community arenas.
Additionally, our ideal candidate will have:Proven experience in working within a Kaupapa Māori environment
Be experienced in working in the whānau and bring a strong commitment to working with whānau.
A good level of understanding of Tikanga Māori and te reo Māori is preferred
Demonstrate the cultural intelligence necessary to understand whānau situations and build relationships of trust and confidence.
Have empathy and patience, demonstrate resilience, critical thinking, and problem-solving techniques
